Blood testing (Phlebotomy) services in Waltham Forest are changing

Blood testing services in Waltham Forest are changing over the next few weeks.

North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) is to take over delivery of the Community and Domiciliary Phlebotomy Service from 1 November 2017.

Longer opening hours
Once operating at full capacity, the new service will see longer opening hours and the introduction of an online appointment booking system to reduce queuing and overcrowding on sites during peak periods.

The change follows patient feedback that the existing walk-in and wait service was not working out on too many occasions.

In order to deliver an improved service with more appointments available overall, the community-based service will be delivered from fewer sites.

The sites the community service will be delivered from are:

  • Silverthorn Medical Centre, 2 Friars Close, E4 6UN
  • St James Health Centre, 47 St James St, Walthamstow, London E17 7NH
  • Langthorne Health Centre, 13 Langthorne Rd, London, E11 4HX

Initially, while the new service is getting up and running, the new clinics will be open (first to last appointment) in the morning only from 8.15am to 12.30pm.

From 16 November 2017, blood tests will be available at the St James Health Centre site all day, with an afternoon clinic held from 1.15pm to 5.30pm.

To ensure a robust phlebotomy service is in place across the borough, the clinics which currently operate at the following locations will no longer run as of 31 October 2017:

  • Chingford Health Centre
  • Comely Bank Health Centre
  • Oliver Road polyclinic

Online booking now available

Waltham Forest residents referred for blood tests by their GP can now book online for appointments from 16 November 2017.

It’s hoped the new pre-booked service, which is only available online, will reduce waiting times.

If patients are unable to book their own appointment, a relative or carer can register to book on their behalf.

Walk-in appointments will continue to be available until further notice for patients who are unable, or do not wish, to pre-book an appointment.

Please note appointments cannot be pre-booked by telephone.

If you have been referred by your GP, book your blood test appointments online at www.nelft.nhs.uk/services-wf-community-phlebotomy, clicking on the link next to the online booking option for the clinic you wish to attend.

If you have any feedback on the new booking process, please email wfccg.communications@nhs.net

Blood tests at home
Patients requiring their blood tests to take place in their own homes will need to be referred to the NELFT domiciliary phlebotomy team by their GP.

Blood tests for children aged 10 and over
The community phlebotomy service is available to all children aged 10 and over who are registered with a Waltham Forest GP or, if not registered, resident in the borough. These patients will be able to access the same clinics as adult patients, and a parent or guardian will be able to pre-book an appointment for them using the new system once it is in place.

Aged nine and under
Children under the age of 10 requiring a blood test will be referred to the phlebotomy service at Whipps Cross Hospital by their GP.

Feedback
If you have any feedback on the new service as of 1st November 2017, please share it with NHS Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group by emailing wfccg.communications@nhs.net, putting Phlebotomy Service Feedback in the subject header.
