The future of local NHS services – more time to have your say and get involved

Local people are being given more time to give their views on a proposed £100m investment across three boroughs in north-east London.

The engagement period is being extended from 22 May to midnight on 31 May, giving more time to develop discussions already underway and answer questions on the ambitious plans.

Waltham Forest, Newham and Tower Hamlets CCGs and Barts Health have joined forces to develop a programme called Transforming Services Together, which plans to invest more than £100m in new health services and buildings over the next five years.

The next local drop-in event is being held at Whipps Cross Hospital on Thursday 19 May between 12pm – 2pm.

Dr Anwar Khan, Chair of NHS Waltham Forest CCG, said extending the period of engagement would enable those involved in developing the Transforming Services Together programme to build on the comments received so far and give more time to answer questions.

Dr Khan added: “We have already received a lot of support for the plans although we have also received valuable ideas on how to make improvements. There is some concern about whether the local NHS can deliver these ambitious plans so we do need to look at how robust the plans are and what alternatives there are if we cannot deliver all the changes.

“More than 270,000 people are expected to move into east London in the next 15 years – the equivalent of another London borough. Increasing numbers of people and changing local health needs mean we need to strengthen our partnership with local people.

“The proposed changes aim to improve hospital services such as emergency and maternity but also to provide better access to other services closer to people’s homes, so they don’t have to come into hospital unless it is absolutely necessary.

“In this extended period of engagement, we want to hear from people who have an interest in the NHS. We particularly want to know if you would like to be involved in developing the services of the future – you can sign up on our website."

The Transforming Services Together proposals aim to provide more care in GP surgeries, in pharmacies and in people's homes as well as to develop centres of excellence in some specialist services. They also set out to make services more efficient by renovating buildings, improving the way patient records are handled and streamlining computer systems so that they communicate with each other effectively.
